If you’ve ever woken up unable to fully reassemble yourself after a bachelorette weekend in Old Town, a wedding at the Wrigley Mansion, or just one too many margaritas on a Saturday night, the IV hangover drip is the closest thing to a time machine we sell.
This is the post we wish someone had handed us before we figured it out ourselves. Here’s what’s actually happening in your body, why a Pedialyte and a nap aren’t cutting it, and exactly what we put in our Pure Hydration bag.
What a hangover actually is
A hangover is three problems at once. First, alcohol is a diuretic — it forces your kidneys to dump water and electrolytes faster than you can replace them. Second, the byproducts of alcohol metabolism (especially acetaldehyde) are inflammatory and toxic. Third, alcohol disrupts blood sugar and the sleep cycle, so even the rest you got isn’t real rest.
Drinking water helps. Eating something with salt helps. But you cannot rehydrate cells through your gut faster than your gut wants to absorb — and when you’re nauseated, your gut wants to absorb at about 10% of normal capacity. That’s the bottleneck a Pedialyte run into.
Why an IV hangover drip works differently
An IV bypasses the gut entirely. A liter of saline plus electrolytes goes directly into the bloodstream over 30–45 minutes — the same volume would take 4+ hours to absorb orally if you could even keep it down. Within the first 15 minutes most patients describe a "clearing" feeling. By the end of the bag, the worst of the headache is usually gone and the brain fog is lifting.
What’s in our Pure Hydration bag
Every Pure Hydration at Peak Performance Hydration is built on the same foundation. Tom and September designed it after watching too many friends suffer through what was, medically, a totally fixable problem.
- 1L Lactated Ringers or normal saline — the actual hydration. This is what does 70% of the work.
- B-complex — alcohol depletes B vitamins fast. Replacing them is what gets your energy back.
- Magnesium — calms the nervous system, relaxes vascular smooth muscle, and is the single best thing for an alcohol headache.
- Anti-nausea (Zofran/Ondansetron) — added on request. If you’re nauseated, this is the first thing to ask for. It works in 5–10 minutes.
- Toradol — optional NSAID for headache. Not for everyone (we’ll screen), but devastating effective when appropriate.
- High-dose Vitamin C — supports the liver while it’s processing the alcohol byproducts.
You can add Glutathione for an extra $30 if you want the master antioxidant boost — we recommend it for patients who drank a lot of red wine or anything with sulfites.
How fast you’ll actually feel it
The honest timeline:
- 0–15 minutes: Nausea fades (if Zofran was added). Headache starts to soften.
- 15–30 minutes: Energy comes back online. Brain fog lifts noticeably.
- 30–45 minutes: Bag finishes. Most patients walk out functional.
- 2–4 hours later: Full clarity returns. You’ll be productive the rest of the day.
That last part is the real value. Without an IV, a real hangover costs you the whole day. With one, you lose 45 minutes.
When NOT to come in
A few cases where we’ll tell you to go home and sleep instead, or seek a higher level of care:
- Suspected alcohol poisoning (confusion, slow breathing, blue lips) — call 911.
- Severe vomiting with no fluid intake for 8+ hours — emergency room first.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding — we have to scope down what we can include.
- You’re still actively drunk and don’t remember the night — we’ll see you tomorrow.
